Description:
Faith, Family, and Folk Tales: The Problem with Leaving Religion Behind A talk by Hari Parekh to open our 2018 season An exploration of the difficulties, impact, and consequences of people who leave religion within the framework of faith, family and folk tales. The term ‘Apostate’ is given to individuals raised within religious families who once identified as religious but who have ceased to believe, and now identify as non-religious. Given the strong feelings families can have about the rejection of their shared faith, this can be a difficult period for the person leaving their faith. The aim of this talk is to highlight and explore the issues above within a psychological framework to further the understanding of why apostatic abuse is an issue worth our time. Hari Parekh graduated with a first-class honours degree in Psychology and Criminology at the University of Northampton, an MSc in Forensic and Criminological Psychology at the University of Nottingham, and is currently an Assistant Psychologist at a low-secure female psychiatric hospital. Outside of academia, Hari was the Founder and President of his non-religious society at the University of Northampton, has worked for the student sector of Humanists UK for the last three years as a Regional Development Officer for the East Midlands, New Societies Officer, President, and as President Emeritus currently for Humanist Students. During this time, Hari has supported societies across the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, and has organised and run successful events across the country. As an apostate himself, Hari is hugely passionate about apostasy and helping those who are either thinking about leaving religion or having left their religious faith and need emotional support. Hari has written his MSc thesis on the abuse of apostates within religious households and is currently looking to publish his work.
