The history and character of the Morning Star, previously the Daily Worker, founded in 1930 and still the world's only English-language socialist daily.

This film tells the story of attempted closures, boycotts, right-wing resistance and daily production of the Morning Star, a unique paper exercising unique responsibilities.

Free showings at 4:15 and 7 pm.

At 5pm Company Secretary Tony Briscoe talks about the challenges getting the Star produced and distributed each day - followed by discussion.

Description:

For Peace and Socialism – a look inside the only daily paper owned by its readers

Britain’s socialist newspaper, the Morning Star, is produced on a shoestring. How is it done and why is it worth supporting?

Tony Briscoe will talk about the everyday challenges of producing, financing and distributing this unique newspaper.

Also showing: The Daily Miracle – a short film about the history and production of the Morning Star.

Tony Briscoe is a life-long reader and supporter of the Morning Star, and is currently Company Secretary for the Peoples Press Printing Society, the co-operative that produces the paper. Before that he was a lawyer working for the trade union movement, winning compensation for many workers who were victims of injuries at work.

Dr Belinda Brooks-Gordon: The Myths and Stereotypes that Surround Sex Work

What is the make up of the sex industry in Britain today? How prevalent is trafficking? What is the point of the law on sex work? What does it aim to do, and does it work? Belinda Brooks-Gordon will be talking about the myths and stereotypes that surround sex work by examining the evidence base, case studies, and policy to show how the law is working, and where it isn’t.

Dr Belinda Brooks-Gordon C.Psychol, is a Reader in Psychology and Social Policy at Birkbeck, University of London. A chartered psychologist with a PhD from the University of Cambridge Law Faculty, Belinda’s research focuses on the safety, health, welfare and human rights of vulnerable workers. Belinda’s book The Price of Sex: Prostitution, Policy and Society was short-listed for the British Society of Criminology Book Prize 2007. Other books include: Death Rites and Rights; Law and Psychology: Current Legal Issues; and Sexuality Repositioned: Diversity and the Law. She also writes in the mainstream broadsheet press and sometimes on legal blogs..
